Here are a few yarns or stories about some of my favourite cards. You don't put together a collection of over 300 cards without a few stories to tell or some hairy moments along the way! I have been blessed during my time collecting to have had a lot of help from collectors worldwide. I have had numerous #21 cards sent to me for free, as well as Garnett collectors from around the world sell or trade me their #21 serially numbered cards to help me out.
In chronological order, here some of my best cards and the stories that came with them.
Also if you click here you will see my Top 50 cards ranked from my collection.

1997-98 SP Profiles Level 3 21/100
This card was from an early US ebay win. It was a steal at just $40 and I was rewarded even further when the seller sent the card in a great display case free of charge. Always loved the photo and the hand numbering, which I managed to fade over time!

1998-99 Hoops Slam Bams 21/100.
One of the world's greatest Garnett collectors went by the online name Kobedock. He was a French collector with an amazing online site showcasing his collection. When I discovered Matthieu's site it was like a goldmine for a fellow KG collector such as myself. He had three different #21 cards and we managed to work out deals for two of them. This rare Slam Bams parallel /100 is a good example of a corny late 90's insert that has become exceedingly hard to find and more valuable as time goes on. I'll be forever grateful to Matthieu for making this card available to me for a good price.

I found this beautiful card residing in the collection of the world's biggest Michael Finley collector, a Norwegian called Rune who had pulled it from a pack himself. He's a good man who loves nothing more than putting a set together. He said the card was available to me, but I had to find him 6 different autograph cards he needed for a set for the deal to go through. I hunted across forums and auction sites the world over and over a period of 3 or 4 months found the cards he needed. It was all worth it when this beauty arrived and by coincidence was the 100th #21 card in my collection. Rune was generous enough to send me another #21 card recently - this one being 21 years old, the oldest in my collection.

An old card, but a recent addition. Rare 90's cards are very hard to find - jersey numbered versions are like white whales. I came across a great guy called Vito from The Phillipines who loved collecting rare gems from the 90's. He knew of my collection and we managed to strike a deal, which came rather fortuitously around the same time as my birthday! $$

The second card I managed to pry from Matthieu's Garnett collection. I traded away 8 different cards to land it but it's always been one of my favourites.

Arguably the rarest and most valuable card I own. Sometimes you just get lucky and I certainly was with this card. I rarely used the old Beckett forum site but I was on there when Dave, a Steve Nash collector pulled this card from a pack during a break. He knew the card would mean a lot to me being that it was 21/25 and so gave me a crazy good price for it. Crazy design and now impossible to find. I've seen one other in 10 years.

2000-01 Upper Deck Gold Super Patch 21/25
In 1997-98 Upper Deck made the first ever card with a jersey piece in it. In 1999-00 they made cards with patches - I very nearly landed the 21/25 gold version, but missed out. However having this 2000-01 21/25 is the next best thing. It involved me selling another 21/xx card for the only time in my collecting years. I was made an offer I couldn't refuse for a Garnett autograph card, and with the money I made, I was able to buy this card off a German collector. A very simple design, with the patch coming from Garnett's name on the back of the jersey.

The first Garnett autograph on this list and one that didn't come cheap. This was from the first deal I did with a Taiwanese collector called Jimmy. He had some beautiful Garnett cards, three of which were jersey numbered. In the end I ended up with two of them. This card is a rare 15 year old Garnett auto which now sells for plenty. I'm very lucky to have the 21/21 version

No great story behind this one, I got it via a trade from the Beckett forums. Just a beautiful parallel with an awesome photo, and the #21 plastered all over the front.

2001-02 Upper Deck Flight Team High Class Gold 21/50
After receiving my first 21/xx card as detailed on the 'My Collecting Story' page, this card was the 2nd card that was #21 that I landed. It kinda cemented for me that having the jersey numbered version of a card is the best edition of it you can have. It has always been a favourite of mine because of the photo, which is my favourite of any Garnett card I have seen.

2002-03 Upper Deck Buybacks Breakout Performers Auto 21/25
Sometimes you see a card up for auction on ebay and you think it will sell for plenty, then for some reason it goes cheap. They seem to slip through the cracks. This great auto cost me just $51.

No great story behind this one. It's just pure eye candy. A card I hoped one day the 21/25 version would pop up on ebay and in 2008 it did. I've not seen another one since.

A card so simple yet so easy on the eye. Like the card above it, I'd always wanted a copy of this. I was searching the vast abyss that is the beckett marketplace when I saw one for sale. I knew it was #'d to 25 but it didn't have the serial number. I emailed the seller asking. I obviously had a 1 in 25 chance it was 21/25 and waddaya know!! In another collecting lifetime I'd collect this whole set.

Another example of eye candy from 2003-04. Beauty is often in the eye of the beholder. I won this card for $3 on ebay in 2006. Unfortunately none of the other colourful parallels have ever popped up jersey numbered.

2004-05 Exquisite Collection Exquisite Auto Patch 21/100
This card is a big part of how my 21 collection began and is featured in the 'My Collecting Story' section. It was the first #21 card I ever got. As part of the deal involved to get this card. I traded my friend Patrick a Larry Johnson 1997-98 Essential Credentials #2/33 which I remember winning for a cool $35 back in the 90's. So I guess you could say the idea of jersey numbered cards for me began way back in the late 90's. Now it is common place for collectors to chase the elusive card featuring their players jersey number, with any high end Exquisite Collection card now selling with a healthy premium.

2004-05 SP Game Used Extra Significance Dual Auto Garnett/Russell 21/25
Easily the best of the dual autos I have, this card has quite a story attached. Both for the players involved and for myself. The card was created in 2005 when KG was playing for the Timberwolves. Bill Russell is a Celtics icon and the most winningest player in NBA history with 11 championship rings. Both players were defensive juggernauts and it was a wise choice to have them feature together on a dual auto card. Their connection became even more real when Garnett, after years of effort and grind as a Timberwolf, was traded to the Boston Celtics at the start of the 2007-08 season. The late Stuart Scott introduced this surreal piece on ESPN as the two greats met. At the end of the season Kevin Garnett and the Boston Celtics were world champions, I was in tears in my living room watching KG's 11 year emotional journey for a ring finally succeed. This video aptly finishes with Garnett hugging Bill Russell.
As for the card itself. As KG was traded to the Celtics and his jersey number changed to #5, the number of Timberwolves 21 cards dropped away dramatically. All his new cards featured KG wearing #5, with his jersey numbered cards selling for high prices because of the Celtics huge fan base.
After a year or two of his Celtics career I was at a crossroads and was thinking about throwing the towel in with my 21 collection. I wrote about this on the ozcardtrader website and received a lot of encouragement from buddies there to carry on. Then about a week later, out of the blue, a package arrived. I opened it and could not believe what I saw. This beautiful KG/Russell jersey numbered dual autograph. The card was sent anonymously. It is easily a $200 card in value and to receive it from a fellow collector left me with no option but to continue collecting. I eventually tracked down who sent me the card, a great online Aussie collector called Ersk. I'll forever be in his debt. Sorry for the long read but this one really means something.

We all have ups and downs in life, and I'll never forget the day when this card arrived. I'm a school teacher and our school was undergoing a 3 yearly visit from the national education review office. It wasn't going well! I'd had a nightmare of a day and was not in a great mood when I arrived home from work. There was a package in the mail from Japan and I had no idea what it was. I opened it to reveal this amazing card! It had been sent to me by an American collector living in Japan called Jeff (online jkinjp) who went on a binge of good deeds, sending free cards to collectors he knew around the world. He put a smile on the face of lots of collectors, me included! My day went from horrible to unreal in a very short period of time. Sadly Jeff is rarely spotted online these days but people who got to know him won't forget what a great guy he is.

A few years back I met a Chinese collector who had some beautiful KG cards. We became good friends and emailed back and forth for several years. He Jiyuan worked in the mining industry and travelled around a lot. He had this one 21/xx card and after a while he decided to sell it to me. He collected very high end KG cards and I was lucky to be given a chance to purchase such a beautiful card. A few years later he sent me another card, but that's another story....

2004-05 UD Trilogy Autofocus Crystal 21/25
I spend a small period of each day hunting online sites and auction sites for #21 cards. I became aware of a beautiful card set called 'Autofocus Crystal' when I discovered a collector called William Shu who was putting the set together. His Garnett in the set was 21/25 and quickly became my dream card. I contacted him abut the card, he was a good guy to talk with, but he said it wasn't for sale. So I became resigned to the card being one that got away. All collectors know, you can't win em all!
Then out of the blue he put the card for sale on ebay. I consulted my financial advisor (read wife!) to loosen some funds and with a last second snipe won this card with only $3 to spare on my bid. I was ecstatic, as was William when he found out I'd won it. The autographs on these clear plastic cards fade quickly so it rarely sees the light of day, but it remains one of my favourite cards.

An amazing card that you could photograph 20 times and get 20 different looks. The same card has a green look to it on 'The 21 Collection' page. Somehow I won this card for just $21 back in the day, I've been offered $200 for it since. They just don't make em like this anymore...

2005-06 Exquisite Collection Limited Logos Autograph 21/50
An long time Garnett collector called Eric from Minnesota had a massive KG collection. He chased down and won 6 or 7 of these KG Limited Logos including some with amazing patches. Of course I had to ask if this 21/50 version was available and of course it wasn't! Eric and I kept in touch and eventually he decided to sell all his Limited Logos. He was extremely kind in allowing me this one for a price I could afford. It STILL is the most I have spent on a card. The story however didn't stop there. Eric mailed the card off to me in New Zealand. With a high end card like this I tend to check the mailbox every day with a fair amount of trepidation, especially when it is due. As the days ticked by the card didn't show up. Eric and I decided to be patient. A card usually takes 7-10 days from the US to NZ
After two weeks - nothing....
After three weeks....nothing. I was cursing every day at the mailbox by now. Eric and I were in touch regularly and both of us were worried it had been lost.
Finally a month went past. Eric decided if the card hadn't arrived the next day he'd refund me my money. Amazingly the next day there's a parcel in the mail. On it it showed that the the US Postal Service had sent the card to ECUADOR!! Eric had written the address to New Zealand perfectly and they sent the damn thing to Ecuador! Luckily the good people at the Ecuadorian Postal Service redirected it to me in New Zealand and Eric and I both celebrated the weirdest mail day you can imagine!

2005-06 Reflections Dual Fabric Reflections Blue 21/25
This one is a doosie! There are a lot of great people in the hobby, and then there are some bad apples. This card was a run of the mill $20 ebay win. Except I never received the card. After a month I contacted the seller about it and she mentioned they'd been out of town etc etc.... After a lack of response after that and still no card I left negative feedback. What followed was a torrent of abuse, including threats for them to come down to New Zealand and deal to me - all over a $20 card. The seller 'knew people......'
Eventually the continued threats got rather stressful so I reported the abuse to Ebay and paypal who ruled in my favour and refunded me the $20 from the seller's account. Eventually she sent the card after about two months, and I sent her the cash back. Easily the worst transaction I've had.

I mentioned my Chinese friend He Jiyuan previously. A few years back he got in touch with me saying this card had been pulled in China, wondering if I would like the card. Unfortunately money was a bit tight at the time and so I had to decline. Collecting cards is a hobby and spending in my eyes needs to be kept in perspective. Every now and then you have to say no. This was one of those times. Now I mentioned He was a good guy and it wouldn't have been more than a month later this card showed up at my house unannounced. A great gesture from great guy. He collected such high end cards there was no way I could ever pay him back but I haven't forgotten!

A few years back an Aussie Lebron James collector called Bronbron contacted me and said he had a little something for me. He wouldn't tell me what it was. I offered to pay him for whatever he had but he said no. So I waited for some mail to arrive and got this glowing card #'d 21/27 with the #21 plastered all over it!!!
It's a good example of the random gestures of good will in the collecting community. I've been able to pay it forward a few times but nowhere near as many times as I've been the beneficiary.

When you check ebay daily for cards you deserve a bit of luck every now and then. I definitely got lucky with this card. It was listed on ebay about a minute before I looked online and had a crazy low Buy it now option. It was too good to be true. I had to check to see why this could possibly be happening. There was no reason so BANG - hit the BIN and the seller was very happy to have the card go to a long time collector. I also have the Gold 21/25 version of this card but it's nowhere near as nice a card - I think it's my best patch card bar none.

2006-07 Ultimate Collection Premium Patch 21/50
The state of this card.
It popped up on ebay and it was in such a state I didn't know whether I wanted to win it! Normally 'Premium Patches' are sought after cards with large beautiful designs and great patches. However this one looked like it'd had spent a week in a kid's pocket before going through the wash. It was listed online with 'a few creases.' I decided to bid a fairly moderate $36 and won it for $34.
A good card ruined!

The most recent Garnett autograph I have. With Panini now having the NBA card licence and KG signed up with Upper Deck, there may not be any more. A straight forward ebay win but a valued one at that.

What a card/booklet! Best thing about this card was it had my old favourite Larry Johnson and Garnett on the same card. Both with awesome photos too. In fact all the players featured were all superb players. My long time friend Patrick helped me win this card. It took me an age to pay him back but we're all squared up now!!!

Last but not least, as Garnett's career winds down, it's great to see him back where it all started with the Timberwolves. He's now 40 years old and struggles to get on the court. There is a lot of young talent with the Wolves, and I hope to find dual cards with Andrew Wiggins and young star Karl Anthony Towns before he retires. This card was put up on ebay for a healthy price. I made an offer and then the seller decided he wanted to keep the card. I was gutted! Ah well, you can't win em all! Nek minnut (actually next week) he changed his mind, got in touch with me and accepted it!!
